How Can I Have a Bonfire Safely?

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

Everyone loves a bonfire, just be sure to have fun safely and call SERVPRO if anything goes awry.

Bonfires Are Fun in the Fall But There Are Some Safety Guidelines to Protect Your Orlando Home

Autumn is the perfect time for a bonfire. The temperatures are starting to drop, and the thought of leaves, pumpkins, and friends are in the air. But large fires of any kind can spell trouble for nearby buildings, homes and trees in Orlando. Putting safety first is vital if you are planning any kind of controlled burn.

What Are Some Safety Guidelines?

First and foremost, check your local weather and fire risk. You can go online and determine whether or not you are allowed to have a bonfire due to a fire risk. Never host one if there are high winds as sparks can spread further than you think. The last thing you want is fire damage to your Orlando home because a traveling spark landed on the roof. Other guidelines SERVPRO recommends include:

  • Checking to verify it is legal to have a bonfire on the location of choice.
  • Be prepared with a garden hose nearby to put out unwanted flames.
  • Use dry, seasoned wood.
  • Do not use treated wood and never throw things like furniture on the fire.
  • Never burn aerosols, paint, or foam. They produce toxic fumes, are highly flammable, and can explode.
  • Keep it small; a 5x5 area is a reasonable size to control.
  • Put someone in charge of watching any children attending.
  • When finished, rake the coals and charred wood as you douse with water.
  • Spread the ashes and thoroughly saturate with water.

Have Fun, Stay Safe

Over 85% of wildfires in the U.S. are caused by people. Many of those are from bonfires and campfires. Take the necessary precautions to protect not only you and your home but the vicinity around you as well. It only takes a few stray sparks to set your home on fire.

At SERVPRO, we understand fire damage. We hope you never need us to come to your home. But if you do, our technicians are available around the clock. Contact SERVPRO of South Orange County at (407) 226-2621 for expert fire damage service.
